Summary
Here are the winners of NorQuest’s Civil Society Speakers Series’ student essay contest. There were three categories for a student to be able to win in this essay contest. To view the eligibility criteria for the contest, click below:
Category A Winner
Fakhra Abrar is a 33-year-old wife and mother of two who arrived in Canada from Pakistan in 2016. She is enrolled in NorQuest’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program. She is a chemist by trade and also holds an MBA in business. After finishing her language training, Fakhra wants to pursue a career in Canada as a businesswoman and philanthropist. Currently, she volunteers her time to teach sewing classes to children from her home.
Category B Winner
Tammy Kaglik is a 44-year-old academic upgrading student at NorQuest College. She is a single mother of four originally hailing from the Northwest Territories. She wants to join NorQuest’s Social Work program upon completion of her upgrading.
Category C Winner
Xiang Zhang is a 46-year-old husband, father of two children, and a former advertising manager in his home country. He arrived in Canada from China in 2012 and began English training almost immediately. He has spent the last two years at NorQuest in English as a Second Language (ESL)programming, and most recently in the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program. In September of2018, he will begin studying in NorQuest’s Practical Nurse program. His goal is to become an LPN specializing in senior care.
