Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Week

SUMMARY

On March 19, 2019, CCS collaborated with MacEwan University to raise awareness on gender inequality and how Canadians for a Civil Society strive to increase diversity and inclusion. The event took place on campus, where three of our board members participated as presenters and facilitators. The presentations were on gender equality and civil society – which is also part of the CCS mission.

Vasant Chotai’s Presentation

Our first presenter, Vasant Chotai, discussed the role men must play in achieving gender equality. The objective was to encourage men to participate in the fight for gender equality instead of simply being bystanders. Men traditionally hold some strategic power positions, and their participation is a significant part of the solution, and without their full and active participation, the efforts will be frustrated

Dr. Vivian Abboud’s Presentation

Our second presenter, Dr. Vivian Abboud, highlighted gender discrimination as it happens and how women experience it. Her presentation was about “The Essence of Gender Equality” where she talked about what actions women can take to strengthen their role in society. Dr. Vivian Abboud takes a personal spin in her presentation by drawing insights from her professional journey. She speaks about how women can utilize assertive skills paired with a diligent approach to climb the corporate ladder and move into more rewarding and decision-making positions. Her education, career path and current status was used to demonstrate how this can be done successfully.

Satya Das’ Presentation

Our third presenter, Satya Das, focused on the five pillars of a civil society: human rights, literacy, rule of law, respect, and meaningful economic opportunity. Satya Das facilitated a conversation on what it means to foster a civil society. As people of Treaty Six, the participants met in Circle to abet solidarity and communion.
