CANADIAN VALUES, CANADA’S VALUES

SUMMARY

In preparation for Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, CCS partnered with the Peter Lougheed Leadership College at the University of Alberta to convene a citizen engagement on April 15, 2015. The event’s purpose was to engage citizens to share their visions, hopes and dreams for the future of Canada. The objectives we aimed to reach were to reflect on:

  • The Canadian values that have shaped us
  • Canada’s value as an exemplar of civil society
  • Being and belonging at home and in the world
  • Becoming the best Canada for the world
  • Evolving a new political and societal culture where peace, human dignity and the broader framework of human rights become the foundation of everyday life

The evening featured a panel consisting of former prime minister Kim Campbell, former minister of foreign affairs Lloyd Axworthy, author and senator Douglas Roche in conversation on Canadian values.

This event was to become the first of many public engagements until 2017 to discuss and reflect upon our shared future. The bigger event to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday never came to fruition, and we could not proceed. However, our proposal is available for you to view.
