Building empathy conquering apathy symposium 2016

Summary

The 2016 BECA event took place from May 13 to May 14, 2016, and was initiated by Judy Piercey, our board member, from 2016 to 2017. We partnered with MacEwan University, NAIT and Indo-Canadian Women’s Association to raise awareness about human rights violations.

Human Rights activist Leslee Udwin, the acclaimed director of “India’s Daughter,” keynoted this event. The symposium was a huge success, attended by more than 250 participants. We were very much inspired by the power of Empathy displayed in the daily lives and communities around us.

The goals of this event were to facilitate dialogue and understand the intersection between gender-based violence, human rights, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, and race and poverty. Using this platform, we created opportunities to share knowledge and information about promoting practices and build momentum for deeper collaboration in the future.
