Being & Belonging

overview

Published in 2019, the book Us, by Edmonton strategist and author Satya Das, addresses deep disaffections that afflict humans beings and their societies—the feeling of disconnectedness from the echelons of power, that the system is gamed to benefit the few at the expense of the many. Along with that is an abiding fear that even the most advanced societies struggle to put human dignity and well-being at their core as an abiding principle.

Us speaks to the disaffection and ongoing journey and perpetual work of making civil society together: through respect, literacy, human rights, the rule of law and meaningful economic and social opportunity. In the shadow of the continuing pandemic, the need has never been more apparent or more urgent for a just and inclusive society, where pluralism and diversity are seen as strengths rather than failing and where societal development works for all.

In partnership with the Edmonton Heritage Council, CCS aims to develop a path forward for our community and its people by encouraging people to participate in a facilitated “circle” conversation with others on the theme of being and belonging, connected to the journey and future proposed in Us.

Format

  • Each circle will consist of groups of 12 to 15 individuals who will come together to discuss the theme in a 1.5 to 2 hour time frame, supported by a facilitator and a set of guiding questions.
  • The circle approach to the conversation (virtual) brings equal worth and value on every voice, to stimulate conversation and creates a safe and welcoming place to discuss being together.
  • Organizations and their members, including staff, leadership, and volunteers are encouraged to “host” a circle that brings people in their organization into this conversation.
  • Each participant will receive a complimentary copy of Us.

Preparation & Commitment

  • Inviting and registering participants, scheduling with facilitator and recorder
  • Preparing participants with short, initial reading from Usand the guiding questions
  • Consent from participants to have an unattributed summary of the conversation as a community engagement contribution to a citizenship and human rights conference hosted by the University of Alberta in November 2021,From Isolation to Inclusion: Navigating the post-COVID World,
  • Review of the conversation notes.
